As the Indian electric vehicle (EV) industry surpasses 4 million sales, industry specialists are advocating for public-private collaborations to boost EV adoption further and reach the 30% EV target.
The India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) recently convened the India EV Fast Charging Summit in New Delhi, drawing attention to the pressing need for increased investment in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, according to a report by the Economic Times. The summit comes at a pivotal moment as the Indian EV industry celebrates surpassing 4 million sales. Industry experts emphasized that to accelerate EV adoption and achieve the ambitious target of 30% EV penetration by 2030, robust public-private partnerships are essential.
A significant focus of the event was addressing the issue of range anxiety among EV users, which remains a major barrier to widespread adoption. Participants highlighted that the development of a comprehensive and reliable charging network is crucial for alleviating consumers’ concerns about driving range and charging availability. The IESA projected that maintaining the current growth momentum in the EV sector will require an investment of USD 20-30 billion to enhance the country’s EV charging infrastructure.
Adding to the industry’s optimism, the Indian government’s forthcoming PM e-Drive scheme was a topic of keen interest among attendees. With a dedicated budget of INR 2,000 crore, the scheme is expected to provide incentives for establishing charging stations nationwide. Stakeholders at the summit expressed anticipation for the implementation of this initiative, viewing it as a significant step toward bolstering the EV ecosystem.
The convergence of industry insights and government support at the summit underscores a collective commitment to transforming India’s transportation landscape. As the nation strives to meet its 2030 EV penetration goals, the collaboration between public entities and private sectors is poised to play a critical role in shaping a sustainable and electrified future for Indian mobility.
