Plans are underway to expand the service further, with an additional 12 stations set to launch soon.
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has teamed up with SUN Mobility, an electric vehicle (EV) energy services provider, to implement EV battery-swapping stations at metro premises. This initiative aims to enhance convenience for commuters with electric vehicles, allowing them to swap batteries seamlessly during their metro commutes. By integrating such facilities, BMRCL is supporting sustainable transportation and promoting the use of EVs in the city.
Conveniently positioned in parking lots and auto stands, these all-new battery-swapping stations serve passengers commuting to and from metro trains, offering efficient and eco-friendly transportation solutions. In the past month alone, these stations have collectively facilitated an impressive 1,25,000 kilometers of travel, handling an extraordinary throughput of 19,000 vehicles. According to the company, each BMRCL station, on average, accommodates approximately 2,800 vehicles, comprising 2,300 two-wheeler trips and 500 three-wheeler trips.
This collaboration is focused on improving convenience and accessibility for metro commuters. The initiative has seen early success with the deployment of facilities at seven operational stations along the Green and Purple Lines. Plans are underway to expand the service further, with an additional 12 stations set to launch soon.
BMRCL Managing Director Maheshwar Rao M stated that BMRCL is committed to fostering sustainable urban mobility through innovative solutions. The collaboration with SUN Mobility strengthens last-mile connectivity by introducing efficient battery swapping stations, delivering significant value to EV users. Together, they aspire to scale this initiative across the entire city.
