The latest in SMF batteries

Thursday, July 11, 2013: Sealed maintenance free (SMF) batteries are widely used in the solar energy, telecom and power sectors. One of the recent advances in SMF batteries includes absorbed glass mat (AGM) technology, which helps in eliminating water loss in the battery. The latest in the SMF category is gel batteries that essentially incorporate all the properties of a pure lead-acid battery, but have a much longer lifespan, better manageability, are leak-proof, and more effective in terms of amperage and current delivery. In this section, we feature some of the new launches in SMF batteries over the last one year. However, companies like Okaya, Truepower, Luminous, and Su-Kam have not launched SMF batteries over the period under review.

Model: VRLA batteries 7AH, 26AH, 42AH, 65AH, 100AH, Brand: Base Robust, Manufacturer: Base Corporation Ltd, India

Launched in April 2013, these batteries incorporate a unique design in which self-sealing valves maximise gas recombination efficiency and minimise gassing in the final stage of charging, so an oxygen generating reaction occurs at the positive plates. This oxygen is transferred inside the battery and then absorbed into the surface of the negative plates.

Key features

  • Absorption gas mat (AGM) technology for efficient gas recombination and lower internal resistance
  • High performance alloy to secure corrosion-proof feature
  • Long service life, float or cyclic application
  • Maintenance-free operation
  • Computer-aided design and manufacturing ensures quality products through the control of processes and standards
  • The low self-discharge rate permits more storage without deterioration of battery performance
  • The heavy duty lead-calcium alloy grids ensure a long and reliable life in both float and cycling applications, even in conditions of deep discharge

Model: AE 100-12 FT, Brand: Artheon, Manufacturer: Artheon Battery Co Pvt Ltd, India

Launched in March 2013, AE 100-12 FT, also called the Black Label range, is designed specifically for applications where cost is a major consideration.

Key features

  • Operating temperature range: -40°C to +50°C
  • Advanced lead-calcium alloy provides reliable expectancy performance and operation
  • Front access terminals ensure ease of installation and maintenance
  • Economical rope handles for easy handling
  • Advanced terminal design to ensure leak-free operation; female M8 brass terminals provide maximum performance

Model: AT6-4.5, Brand: Amptek, Manufacturer: Fusion Power Systems, India

Launched in February 2013, AT6-4.5 sealed gel batteries are the ultimate lead-acid-based solution for demanding deep cycle applications like e-bikes, wheelchairs, scooters, caravans and motor-homes, emergency lighting, golf carts and trolleys, as well as solar power and any other applications where heavy cyclic performance is required.

Key features

  • Has the best in pressure safety release valves, computer controlled gel mixing, and multi-stage vacuum filling. These features combine to eliminate voids and dead spots from forming on the plates during the manufacturing process, which can lead to inconsistent life and reduced performance
  • The gelled electrolyte helps inhibit the wear and tear caused by severe vibrations, and protects the plates in repetitive discharge/recharge situations
  • These electrolytes offer excellent charge efficiency and are not current limited on recharge so long as the voltage is regulated

Model: Powersafe XHD, Brand: Exide, Manufacturer: Exide Industries Ltd, India

Launched in June 2012, Powersafe XHD range of tubular VRLA batteries is ideal for UPS applications. This series comes with torr tubular plates and gel electrolyte technology, which has the ruggedness of tubular coupled with maintenance-free convenience (no topping up for life).

Key features

  • The extra heavy duty XHD series has an unmatched deep cyclic property, the ability to work in partial state of charge, and the ability to work in higher temperatures. It does not need a temperature controlled environment
  • The XHD series is therefore best suited for UPS applications in areas with daily power outages of 6-8 hours, and with a higher ambient temperature
