Saturday, July 20, 2013:

High power LEDs are undergoing continuous improvements in luminous efficacy and life span to meet general illumination and backlighting requirements. In addition, many companies are working towards improving the packaging technology of LEDs, particularly those addressing heat dissipation issues.

In this section, we feature some of the recently launched high power LEDs. However, major companies like Bridgelux, Avago, Hanz Lite, Illumitex Starlight/Gmr Light and Teknovision have not launched any new high power LEDs in the last six months.

Model: XLamp XM-L2 Series, Brand: Cree, Manufacturer: Cree Inc., USA

Launched in December 2012, XLamp XM-L2 LEDs deliver up to 186 lm/W at 350 mA, 25°C. Built on Cree’s revolutionary SC³ technology next-generation LED platform, the XM-L2 LEDs double the lumens-per-dollar and deliver 20 per cent more lm/W over the original XM-L LED, thus enabling lighting manufacturers to use fewer LEDs to deliver a better lighting system for a lower cost. These LEDs are designed for very high-lumen applications such as indoor, high-bay and outdoor lighting.

Key features

  • Characterised at 85°C, the XM-L2 LED is available in 2700K to 6200K colour temperatures and offers minimum CRI options of 80, 85 and 90
  • Size: 5 mm x 5 mm
  • Maximum drive current: 3 A
  • Maximum power: 10 W
  • Light output: Up to 1052 lm at 10 W, 85°C
  • Typical forward voltage: 2.85 V

Model: LUXEON Z ES, Brand: Philips, Manufacturer: Philips Lumileds, USA

Launched in April 2013, LUXEON Z ES offers a micro-footprint, non-domed design with full spectrum availability, enabling high lumen density solutions with precise optical control.

LUXEON Z ES is available with below blackbody binning, a key feature required for superior colour perception in speciality retail and hospitality applications. In directional light sources such as an MR16 lamp, the non-domed design allows better optical coupling for greater luminance at narrower beam angles and better colour consistency than other LED solutions.

Key features

  • Offered over a range of CCTs from 2700 K to 6500 K
  • Micro sized at 1.6 mm x 2.0 mm
  • Hot tested at Tj 85°C
  • 1, 3, and 5 steps MacAdam Ellipse options
  • Ultimate design flexibility due to its micro form factor
  • Precise optical control from a non-domed architecture
  • Leading system level lumen per dollar proposition

Model: Duris S 5, Brand: Osram, Manufacturer: Osram Opto Semiconductors, Germany

Launched in April 2013, Duris S 5 has been launched in three versions with different chip surfaces and, therefore, three different brightness levels.

Key features

The first version can be used wherever a large amount of light has to be emitted from a small surface area, for example, in downlights and LED retrofits.

  • At 3000 K and a CRI of 80, the first version achieves very high brightness of 97 lm and an efficacy of more than 100 lm/W at an operating current of 150 mA
  • The second version is designed for high efficacy, achieving 125 lm/W at 65 mA with 24 lm at 3000 K. It is, therefore, designed for use in panel luminaires and linear retrofits in which individual light points should not be visible and low energy consumption is an important consideration
  • Version 3 has only a slightly lower efficacy and is designed for optimum system costs. It achieves an efficacy of 113 lm/W with a brightness of 28 lm—also at 3000 K
