Osram’s LEDs help NCL achieve 18 per cent energy savings
Objective
American based shipping company, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), decided to make some changes in two of its ships—‘Breakaway’ and ‘Getaway’. The main aim was to make 4000 guests feel comfortable and the second objective was that these lights should vary according to the needs of the area in which they were to be installed. The key operational areas were for entertainment, hospitality, marine lighting, shops, bars, bathrooms, wellness centres, boutiques, corridors, staircases, kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms, event locations, nightclubs/discotheques, restaurants, shopping centres and theatres.
Challenge
The company had to ensure the switch happened within a very short period of time. Besides, it was unsure whether what they were investing in would actually meet the needs of the customers. When the company chose LED lighting, it was unaware about the special expertise needed for the task.
Solution
The company chose Osram for the lighting and its LED lights helped cut down energy usage by 18 per cent. The lights selected are durable and have a life span of 50,000 working hours. They used fluorescent lamps and 30,000m of lighting module system (LMS) luminaries. There were 60,000 to 80,000 lighting points in each ship. The customers were really happy with the new lighting technology. These lights were resistant to salt water while truly complying with the safety regulations of the ships.
