Ultra-compact power supplies

In April 2013, Emerson Network Power launched two ultra-compact AC-DC frontend power supplies that meet the 80 plus platinum standard for efficiency. Rated at 750W and 1100W continuous output, the power supplies share the same form factor, providing the scalability that systems designers need for long life cycle applications, where power requirements may change in the future. The 750W DS750PED and 1100W DS1100PED power supplies are both housed in 1U high rack-mounting enclosures measuring just 86.3 x 196.5 mm. This form factor is significantly smaller than that of similarly rated earlier-generation power supplies—freeing up valuable system space—and is achieved by use of the latest power switching technology and high-density component packaging techniques. Both power supplies combine an exceptional conversion efficiency of 94 per cent peak with a high power density. The DS750PED provides up to 16.4 W/in3. (1 W/cm3), while the DS1100PED can deliver 24 W/in3 (1.46 W/cm3).

3-phase UPS system

In April 2013, Schneider Electric launched its three-phase Smart-UPS VT with hot swappable batteries for small and medium businesses in India. The Smart-UPS VT features a three-phase power protection unit and is specifically designed keeping in mind Indian usage conditions, with features like hot swappable batteries, and pull out and swappable power modules. The product is aimed at the small data centres, server rooms and network closets in India with a focus on the retail, BFSI, IT/ITES, and media verticals. The hot swappable batteries can be easily substituted without interrupting the load, thus allowing for smooth working conditions. The swappable power module comes with a unique slide in/out concept that makes it easy to replace the entire module. The UPS system also ensures highest efficiency of 96 per cent at a 100 per cent load and reduces total cost of ownership by 40 per cent over a range of five years.

Li-ion switching charger

In April 2013, Fairchild Semiconductor launched the FAN54015, a USB-compliant single-cell Li-ion switching charger, which provides designers of mobile device battery chargers a balance of safety, accuracy, efficiency, and the right size. To reduce charge time and mitigate heat dissipation, the FAN54015 switching charger employs a high-efficiency, eco-friendly, 3MHz DC-DC synchronous buck converter capable of supplying 1.45A. Additionally, to accommodate legacy and emerging lithium battery technologies, the regulated battery float voltage can be programmed from 3.5 V to 4.44 V. The device’s innovative system architecture allows reverse use of the switch-mode buck converter, resulting in a 500mA USB on-the-go (OTG) boost regulator, and provides power for USB peripherals.

Intelligent meter controller

In April 2013, Applied Electricals & Electronics launched an upgraded firmware version of its intelligent multi-function meter controller—intelliServo. It minimises the need for external wiring and involves less effort in calibration during the production phase of servo voltage stabilisers.

It has a simple user interface and no special programming skills are required to use it. The firmware is intelligent enough and takes care of all necessary operations. It has a built-in driver for an AC synchronous servo motor, with easy to set parameters to minimise the heating of the motor caused due to fluctuations in the power supply. The LED display shows output voltage, input voltage, high/low voltage and trip indications, and both under voltage/over voltage protection with time delay are built-in.
