In May 2014, Samtec launched its FireFly micro flyover system, which is an inside-the-box interconnect system that gives designers a choice of using either micro footprint high performance active optical engines or low-cost copper interconnects. This allows the designer to upgrade from electrical to optical FireFly using the same connector system. This system enables chip-to-chip, board-to-board and system-to-system connectivity at data rates up to 28 GBps. It offers features such as electrical performance to 28 GBps, optical: 14 GBps and 28 GBps, x12 unidirectional or bidirectional, easy upgrade from electrical to optical, micro rugged two-piece connector, full optical and half optical solutions and proven 850 nm VCSEL technology.
