The city of Manchester saves big bucks by replacing its old streetlights with Siemens Intelligent Traffic Systems’ energy efficient LED lights
Objective
Manchester, a city in New Hampshire (USA), is adopting new technology for its streets by replacing the old streetlights with energy efficient LEDs. The conventional lights had been deemed unsafe over the long run as their poor illumination capabilities resulted in poor visibility on the streets, which hampered commuters. LEDs are proving to be a safe alternative for street lighting, while being energy efficient as well.
Challenges
The mayor of the city was not sure as to which company could successfully fulfil the city’s long term road safety concerns. Another cause of concern was whether the chosen company would be able to provide lighting standards that matched the high standards set by the infrastructure development in the city, while achieving the other crucial goal of energy efficiency.
Solution
After studying all the problems, the city chose Siemens Intelligent Traffic Systems which offer innovative street lighting products that reduce energy usage by 60 per cent, saving over US$ 500,000 annually in electricity and maintenance costs for the city. In order to illuminate the streets beautifully while enhancing citizens’ safety, Siemens is installing 9000 new LED streetlights and is planning to complete this project by September 2015.
The city’s residents hired IBEW Local 490 to help Siemens’ electricians to ensure timely completion of the project and the work currently is ahead of the schedule. Impressed with the course of events, the mayor said, “I look forward to bringing LED technology to our city’s parks and other facilities.”
