SSL LED drivers

In February 2013, Atmel launched its two-channel solid-state lighting (SSL) LED drivers providing accurate colour control for two-colour LED light engines. In addition, the LED drivers deliver the most efficient power management, with the lowest component count, for high CRI LED lamps.

The new MSL2021/23/24 LED devices drive one dominant LED string with a linear controller and one colour LED string with a low-side buck controller to achieve the target correlated colour temperature (CCT) coordinate, and replicate the colour spectrum to attain a high CRI value. The linear controller for white LEDs in this family of devices adaptively controls the headroom of any AC/DC or DC-DC, isolated or non-isolated topology, while external MOSFETs give designers the flexibility of choosing LED currents and LED string lengths.

LED floodlight

In February 2013, GlacialLight launched its compact and lightweight GL-FD30-V2 floodlight with Philips Lumileds LED chips. This DC floodlight automatically detects and adapts to a 12V DC or 24V DC input. GL-FD30-V2 is an ideal solution for transport flood lighting, such as for trains, ferries and cruise ships. Its DC input means that energy is not lost in converting electricity from DC output into AC input. This makes the light a highly energy-efficient option. The DC input of the floodlight also means that the light can be paired with solar panels, enabling environmentally-friendly operation with zero emissions. GL-FD30-V2 is the optimal choice for flood lighting in transport. The compact size (180 x 140 x 105 mm) and its light weight (1.2 kg) enable safe installation and also reduce cargo weight.

LED holder

In February 2013, TE Connectivity launched the Type Z50 LED holder, which forms the core electrical, mechanical, thermal, and optical interconnectivity for Philips Lumileds’ LUXEON K LED and Sharp Electronics’ MEGA ZENIGATA LED. The Type Z50 holder enables designers to develop ZHAGA compliant modules around a common core. The LED holders are available with either optics attachment features or in a low profile form factor. The 50mm diameter Type Z50 holder with an optics attachment is designed to enable the development of ZHAGA certified solutions.

Its mechanical construction provides a reliable down force and an electrical connection over a wide range of operating temperatures.

LED dimmable strips

In February 2013, Rapid Electronics introduced its LED dimmable strip series from Power Pax. These have an added feature—instead of a loose flex, the modular 12 V strips are pre-fitted with a 200mm extension cable, including a 2.1 mm male input socket. This can be connected to a compatible 12V DC power supply, which almost turns the Power Pax strips into plug and play devices. The type of power supply needed will depend upon the length of cable run and associated power consumption. One metre and 5 metre strips are available in five colours—cool white, warm white, red, blue and green—as well as in an RGB colour changing version. Each metre of a strip contains 60 individual long-life, super bright, dimmable LEDs consuming just 4.8 W per metre.
