AC buck switches

acbuckswitchesIn January 2014, Fairchild Semiconductor introduced its FSL306 and FSL336 650 V green mode AC buck switches. These devices offer burst-mode operation with the low available operating current (250 µA) that helps to reduce standby mode power consumption for increased energy efficiency. Power scalability from 0.5 W to 3 W (FSL306) through the adjustable current limit pin helps to simplify designs and reduce design time. The FSL306 and FSL336 provide higher reliability through rich protection features, such as a safe auto restart mode. After a fault condition, the switch waits 650 ms before restarting. This feature reduces the stress on the system during a long-term fault, improving system reliability. These devices combine a PWM controller and a discrete MOSFET in a single package.

SiC diodes

In January 2014, STMicroelectronics launched its dual-configuration Schottky silicon-carbide (SiC) diodes. These are the first such devices in the industry with a voltage rating of 650 V per diode in a choice of common-cathode or series configurations. They can be used in interleaved or bridgeless power-factor correction (PFC) circuits. The 650 V voltage rating provides increased safety margin against hazardous reverse-voltage spikes. In addition, ceramic isolation built into the package of the STPSCxxTH13TI devices simplifies attachment to an external heat sink, allowing the removal of the usual external isolation.

Power MOSFET

In January 2014, Vishay Intertechnology launched a new 30 V asymmetric dual TrenchFETÂ power MOSFET in the PowerPAIRÂ 3 mm by 3 mm package utilising TrenchFET Gen IV technology. Providing 57 per cent lower on-resistance, up to 25 per cent higher power density, and 5 per cent higher efficiency than previous-generation devices in this package size, the Vishay Siliconix SiZ340DT helps to save space and simplify the design of highly efficient synchronous buck converters by combining a high-side and low-side MOSFET in one compact package. The TrenchFET Gen IV technology of the SiZ340DT uses a very high-density design to reduce on-resistance without significantly increasing the gate charge, minimising conduction losses and reducing total power loss for higher power output.
