Buck converter
In May 2013, Linear Technology launched the LTC3639, a 150V input-capable synchronous buck converter which delivers up to 100 mA of continuous output current. It operates from an input voltage range of 4.5 V to 150 V, eliminating the need for an external transient suspension device. The LTC3639 utilises internal synchronous rectification and a programmable peak current-mode design to optimise efficiency over a broad range of output currents. It delivers efficiencies as high as 92 per cent, and requires only 12 µA of quiescent current, maximising battery run time and eliminating thermal issues. A user-programmable output current limit can set output current from 10 mA to 100 mA, thereby minimising the need to oversize external components and protect high impedance sources.

8-bit PIC MCUs
In May 2013, Microchip Technology Inc. expanded its PIC16F75X family of 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) featuring intelligent analogue and core-independent peripherals, making them ideal for general-purpose applications, as well as power supplies, battery charging, LED lighting, power management and power control/smart energy applications. The new PIC16F753 MCUs build on the success of the popular PIC12F752. The PIC16F753 offers all the key features of the PIC12F752, such as the integrated complementary output generator (COG) peripheral that provides non-overlapping, complementary waveforms for inputs such as comparators and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) peripherals, while enabling dead-band control, auto shutdown, auto reset, phase control and blanking control. Additionally, the PIC16F753 offers an op amp with 3 MHz of gain bandwidth product (GBWP), and a slope compensation circuit to help in switch mode power supply applications.

Hub controller chip
In May 2013, Renesas Electronics Corporation launched the μPD720115 USB 2.0 hub controller chip, which supports simultaneous USB communication and charging of portable devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs via a single USB connector. The most important feature of the μPD720115 is its implementation of USB ports with battery charging functionality, which supports the USB battery charging specification, Revision 1.2 (USB BC 1.2). The μPD720115 will make it easier to develop products that support simultaneous data communication complying with the USB 2.0 standard and charge portable devices via a single USB connector, such as PCs, digital TVs, and charging adaptors. It can help shorten system architecture development cycles and reduce development costs. The μPD720115 also has a clock output function (24 MHz) to enable cascade connection of the USB ports to other μPD720115 chips or connection to other chips used by USB peripheral devices.

DC/DC buck and boost converters
In May 2013, Fujitsu Semiconductor Asia Pte Ltd (FSAL) launched two new power management IC products developed to utilise energy harvesting. These are the MB39C811 DC/DC buck converter and the MB39C831 DC/DC boost converter. The MB39C811 buck converter features a quiescent current of just 1.5μA, and achieves world-leading results in ultra-low power operation. Moreover, the MB39C811 represents the world’s first simultaneous use of energy generation from both light and vibration using only one power management IC device. The MB39C831 boost converter includes a function that automatically responds to changes in the surrounding environment in order to store electrical power, such as harvesting power from light according to variations in ambient light, as well as harvesting thermal power according to changes in ambient temperature. This function enables the unit to store energy harvested from the different elements at very high levels of efficiency.
