Current sense resistor
In November 2013, Bourns introduced a new current sense resistor model, CRF0805, designed for applications that require lower power and a smaller footprint. The newly launched device is the smallest surface mount current sense resistor manufactured by Bourns ever. Featuring a power rating of just 0.5 W and a resistance range from 5 milli-ohms to 20 milli-ohms, the model helps meet the ongoing demand for smaller and denser circuit boards. Bourns CRF0805 model is RoHS compliant and features an operating temperature range of -55 °C to +170°C and a temperature coefficient of ±100 PPM/°C.

Power switch
In November 2013, STMicroelectronics launched its new ISO8200B, an innovative isolated power switch that enables smaller, more robust and energy-efficient controllers for industrial automation equipment. Inside the ISO8200B, separate logic and power chips are stacked with the layer interposer that provides very high isolation. The inputs are connected directly to a microcontroller or FPGA (field-programmable gate array) and the device can drive eight output channels connected to any kind of load connected to ground, whether inductive, capacitive or resistive. The design of the IC also ensures a low quiescent operating current, reduced power dissipation and higher energy saving compared to a traditional, optocoupler-based solution. In addition, it has very low on-state resistance, which minimises system energy losses and ensures superior thermal performance for enhanced reliability.

Power management ICs
In November 2013, ROHM introduced power management ICs (PMICs) based on the Intel Atom processor E3800 family.
The Intel Atom processor E3800 family is a system-on-chip designed for intelligent systems, delivering outstanding computing, ECC, HD graphics processing and media performance while operating in an extended range of thermal conditions. Based on the Silvermont microarchitecture, these devices are fabricated on Intel’s industry-leading 22nm process with 3-D Tri-Gate transistors, which deliver significant improvements in performance and energy efficiency. The products in this family offer low power consumption levels that range from 6 to 10 W.

Gas discharge tube devices
In November 2013, Littelfuse introduced the SE series of gas discharge tube (GDT) devices in a square, miniature EIA 1206 package, making it the smallest in the market. Their ultra-low capacitance helps ensure high transmission speeds in broadband applications. They also respond rapidly to fast-rising transients to enhance the protection of sensitive circuitry. They offer excellent stability in multiple pulse duty cycles to help circuit designers boost reliability in applications designed to protect against voltage surges. The SE series GDTs are well suited for a broad range of applications, including security system components such as satellite and CATV equipment, CCTV equipment, analogue video, set-top boxes as well as RS-485 and Ethernet applications.

NPA sensor series
In October 2013, General Electric launched the NPA sensor series, completely calibrated in a miniature-sized cost effective package. The NPA series is available in gauge, absolute or differential pressure ranges with either mV, amplified analogue or digital outputs. It includes several features such as being fully calibrated and compensated, as well as true interchangeability with no field calibration required. It is available in digital output in I2C format, amplified analogue or analogue mV. It has a high accuracy (<1.5%FS) total error band. The temperature measurement feature is available with digital output. It can be used in many applications like instrumentation, HVAC, barometric applications, pneumatic process control, flow and level measurement, gas measurement, leak detection, etc.

Gesture control sensor board
In November 2013, Vishay Intertechnology introduced a gesture control sensor board that supports touchless swipe right, swipe left, proximity and tap control to any device by using a digital proximity sensor and two discrete infrared emitters. The board consists of a Vishay Semiconductors VCNL4020 integrated proximity and ambient light sensor and two of Vishay’s VSMF2890RGX01 infrared diodes mounted on either side of the sensor. Sensors that recognise and respond to hand gestures are being designed into consumer products with increasing frequency. Swiping right and left would move to the next or previous page, picture or selection. A tap would be used to make a specific selection and is similar to touching the screen. Pushing in and out zooms in or out, turns the volume higher or lower, or changes the backlighting intensity.

Capacitive touch controllers
In November 2013, Microchip Technology introduced a new set of capacitive touch controllers, the CAP12XX family. These turnkey capacitive touch controllers provide a wide variety of slider, button and proximity functionality. The CAP12XX controllers make it easy for designers to add aesthetically pleasing, low-cost touch interfaces. This new six-member family comprises CAP1203, CAP1293, CAP1206, CAP1296, CAP1208 and CAP1298, available in 8- to 16-pin packages. These products serve a wide range of applications in the consumer electronics and automotive markets. The family provides designers with improved proximity performance and 3.3V to 5V operation. It is also a lower cost option when integrated LED drivers are not required.
