Diode bridge controller

In June 2013, Linear Technology Corporation introduced the LT4320, an ideal diode bridge controller for 9V to 72V systems that replaces each of the four diodes in a full-wave bridge rectifier with a low-loss N-channel MOSFET to significantly reduce the power dissipation and increase available voltage. The power supply size is reduced as the enhanced power efficiency eliminates bulky heat sinks. Low voltage applications benefit from the extra margin afforded by saving the two diode drops inherent in diode bridges. Compared to the traditional alternative, the MOSFET bridge enables a rectifier design that is highly space- and power-efficient. The controller operates from DC to 600 Hz.

Inductors for automotive applications

In June 2013, Vishay Intertechnology launched two new IHTH high-current, high-temperature through-hole inductors in the 0750 and 1125 case sizes. For automotive applications, the AEC-Q200-qualified IHTH-0750IZ-5A and IHTH-1125KZ-5A handle high operating temperatures of +155°C, high rated currents of 125 A, and a wide range of inductance values from 0.47 µH to 100 µH. With a frequency range of up to 10 MHz for some values, the devices serve as high-performing, space and power saving solutions for voltage regulator modules (VRM) and DC/DC converters. The IHTH-0750IZ-5A and IHTH-1125KZ-5A are designed for high-temperature automotive applications, including engine and transmission control units, diesel injection drivers, LED drivers, HID lighting and noise suppression for motors in windshield wipers, power seats and mirrors, and heating and ventilation blowers.

DC/DC converters

In June 2013, Recom Asia introduced the following DC/DC converters—RH, RV, RP, RGZ, RKZ, RxxPxx, and RxxP2xx, which are especially designed for IGBT driver circuits. Their asymmetric outputs of +15 V and -9 V make them ideal for power IGBT drivers, so now just one converter is needed where previously two were required. The modules are available with input voltages of 5 VDC, 12 VDC and 24 VDC and offer up to 6.4kVDC/1sec isolation. The converters operate reliably at temperatures between -40°C and +90°C without derating and with an efficiency of up to 85 per cent.

Power monitor module

In June 2013, Microchip Technology Inc. launched the MPLAB Real Ice power monitor module, which enables designers to identify and eliminate code that consumes high current, in real time. Combined with the MPLAB Real Ice in-circuit emulator and MPLAB X IDE, this development platform allows users to measure, graphically profile and optimise code power consumption for all of Microchip’s more than 1000 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit PIC microcontrollers. Additionally, it offers unsurpassed micro-Amp current measurement, with an overall dynamic range of up to 1 Amp, and a voltage range of 1.25 V to 5.5 V. This power monitor module is significantly more cost-effective than other similar tools, making it ideal for a broad range of battery-powered, digital power supply, motor-control and metering applications.

High-performance diodes

Infineon Technologies AG has introduced a new transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode series to protect antennae and front-end devices from transient voltage events. The new ESD101x and ESD103x diodes absorb dangerous electrostatic discharges (ESD) to prevent damage to the antenna system while maintaining signal integrity.

The optimised features for antenna protection include a symmetrical bidirectional configuration with a very low capacitance of only 0.1 pF to avoid mismatch and insertion loss. ESD101x and ESD103x offer high linearity as required by TX and RX systems. In order to be compliant with various regulations regarding electromagnetic compatibility (e.g. ETSI EN 300 328), the harmonic generation is minimised.

Smart-meter integrated circuits

In June 2013, STMicroelectronics launched what it claims to be the world’s first smart-meter integrated circuit (IC), the ST75MM, with built-in support for the meters and a more open communications standard, which enables widespread interoperability between smart metering equipment using power line communication (PLC).

The ST75MM IC is the first to embed hardware and communications protocol support for meters and more, simplifying meter design to ultimately enable faster, lower-cost and reliable deployments. the meters and more is an open specification managed by the meters and more not-profit association comprising leading technology companies and utilities spanning the Americas, Europe and Asia. It allows ST75MM IC to benefit from the protocol’s strong features for smart meter and advanced metering infrastructure applications, such as short messages, robust encryption and authentication features, support for network configuration and management, and retransmission management.

MOSFET for relay drivers

In June 2013, Toshiba Corporation launched a MOSFET, the SSM3K337R, for relay drivers. The new device uses an active clamp structure that prevents over-voltage when the inductive load of relay devices is switched off. The SSM3K337R reduces ON-resistance by half and improves the allowable power dissipation by approximately 1.6 times than that of equivalent products. Its key features include an active clamp structure, which reduces the stress caused by the inductive load of relay devices; and it comes with the SOT-23F package.

Large capacity on-chip RAM

In June 2013, Renesas Electronics Corporation announced a total of 15 new products in the RZ/A1 group of embedded microprocessor (MPU) solutions (with sub-categories RZ/A1H, RZ/A1M and RZ/A1L) to create sophisticated human-machine interface (HMI) implementations for the smart society of the future. Key features of the new products include 10 MB of on-chip RAM, the largest capacity in the industry and the capabilities needed to implement an HMI, such as camera input, hardware accelerated graphics output, OpenVG 1.1 and audio functions. Since there is no need for additional external memory (DRAM), developers of new products can implement a WXGA-resolution (1,280 x 768 pixels) graphics display without concern about the long-term procurement of DRAM, while achieving improved system performance, reduced power consumption and lower overall system cost.

Miniature power connector

In April 2013, Phoenix Contact launched PTSPL 6 power connector which requires less space on PCB as compare to other power connector of same rating. However, it accommodates large cable cross section up to 6 mm² (stranded). It is the first high current connector developed by Phoenix Contact for power application but without insulating body. As there is no insulating housing, the voltage is not limited by CTI values of the plastic. It is suitable for THR soldering process. It can therefore be incorporated into the production process of PCBs for power electronics. It is a very cost effective solution for inverter manufacturers in photovoltaic and wind energy.
