Power resistors

Power resistors

In February 2013, ARCOL Resistors launched the RCC025 0.25 W and RCC050 0.5 W solid-carbon resistors designed for high energy-dissipation applications. These small-leaded resistors are non-inductive and combine high-pulse characteristics with excellent stability.

The RCC025 and RCC050 resistors are RoHS compliant and are designed for easy assembly using through-hole PCB mounting. The compact dimensions of the RCC025 are 6.3mm x 2.4mm øD and those of the RCC050 are 9.5mm x 3.6mm øD.

The resistance range is 1 R to 5 M6 for the RCC025 and 1 R to 22 M for the RCC050. The overload characteristics are measured with an applied voltage that is 2.5 times the rated voltage, with no visible damage to the resistor.

RF transceiver

RF transceiver

In February 2013, Maxim Integrated Products introduced MAX2580, a single-chip multi-standard RF-to-bits small cell radio transceiver. This highly integrated solution requires very few external components to execute an all-band, multimode, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radio design. MAX2580 design package also includes full system-level reference designs to shorten time to market. This RF transceiver is ideal for mobile operators planning residential, enterprise, or outdoor small-cell deployments in their next-generation heterogeneous networks (HetNet).

MAX2580 provides wideband frequency coverage with programmable channel bandwidths to support all LTE/3G bands and modes.

Multi-core microcontroller

Multi-core microcontroller

In February 2013, STMicroelectronics announced the arrival of a new member in its multi-core microcontroller (MCU) family—SPC56EL70. It is aimed at functional safety applications in automobile electronics. SPC56EL70 32-bit microcontroller is designed to cover a wide range of automotive applications that need to comply with the automotive safety integrity levels (ASIL) that are now required, up to and including the most stringent ASIL D level. These requirements are now commonplace in critical systems such as anti-lock braking, electric power steering, active suspension and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The microcontroller combines two high-performance cores with 2 MB Flash and 192 KB internal RAM memory, three CAN (Controller Area Network) interfaces, and an optimised peripheral set for safety and motor-control applications, supporting up to two brushless 3-phase motors. The dual-core architecture reduces duplication of components at a system level, lowering overall costs.

nanoDAC+ converter

In February 2013, Analog Devices launched its AD5689R D/A converter. This 16-bit dual nanoDAC+ is part of the series of ADI nanoDAC products offering high performance in smaller packages. With a relative accuracy of ±2-LSB INL, 2-ppm/°C 2.5-V reference, and space saving packages, this combination allows analogue designers to address a wider range of applications without having to trade off performance for a smaller footprint. The series provides a straightforward pin-compatible 10-bit to 16-bit upgrade/downgrade path for applications in a wide range of markets including communications infrastructure, industrial process control, healthcare and instrumentation.

Audio capacitors

In February 2013, Aspen Electronics introduced a high-quality range of specialist audio capacitors from Arizona Capacitors. C50309 range of paper and polyester dielectric, oil-filled capacitors is designed for use in audio equipment such as pre-amplifiers, amplifiers and loudspeaker crossover networks. Using proven, traditional high-quality materials and techniques, the capacitors are designed for high performance and long life and feature the finest capacitor grade kraft paper and polyester available. Components in the range are rated for operation at 600VDC and the standard capacitance tolerance is ±10 per cent. Insulation resistance is quoted at 6000 megohm-microfarads minimum, while the dissipation factor is less than 1 per cent measured at 120 Hz. The operating temperature covers the full military range from -55° to 125°, at full rated voltage.

DC-DC converters

In February 2013, CUI introduced a new family of board mount DC-DC converters developed for railway applications. The modules are designed to comply with the EN50155 standard, which specifies input, EMC, mechanical, and environmental requirements.

Offered in industry standard quarter-brick and half-brick footprints, respectively, the 100 W VQB100R series and the 150 W VHB150R series are highly efficient, reaching levels of up to 92.5 per cent. Though the modules are designed primarily for railway applications, the VQB100R and VHB100R series also target designs that may experience high transients, including telecom systems and battery-powered equipment.

32-bit microcontrollers

In February 2013, Renesas expanded its 32-bit RX microcontroller (MCU) platform. It introduced 120 new models, expanding the successful RX631 and RX63N product groups within the RX600 series of 32-bit MCUs.

The new RX63N/RX631 groups, for use in network equipment, are offering up to 256 KB embedded RAM, doubling the 128 KB RAM size that is typically available currently. Due to the RX platform concept, these new products are pin-to-pin compatible with existing models, and therefore recommended as a drop-in replacement for customers with larger RAM requirements.

Foil resistors

In February 2013, Integrated Electronics Technology (INTRON) introduced foil resistors from Vishay Precision Group.

These foil resistors provide an extremely low temperature coefficient resistance (TCR) of 0.05 ppm/°C typically (0°C to +60°C), long-term stability to ±0.0025 per cent at 70°C and 2000 hours at rated power. It also has electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection for up to at least 25 kV.

These characteristics allow designers to reduce circuit errors significantly and greatly improve overall performance in applications requiring a high degree of precision and stability.

These resistors find application in weighing scales, medical testing equipment, semiconductor equipment, precision measuring instruments, etc.

Buck-boost DC/DC controller

Buck-boost DC/DC controller

In February 2013, Linear Technology Corporation launched LT8705, a very high efficiency (up to 98 per cent) synchronous buck-boost DC/DC controller that operates from input voltages above, below or equal to the regulated output voltage. This device has four feedback loops to regulate the input current/voltage, along with the output current/voltage. The input current and voltage feedback loops can prevent overloading of solar cells. The output current loop provides a regulated output current for a battery charger or current source. LT8705 can be used in a wide range of applications such as a voltage stabiliser in telecom and automotive requirements, as well as in solar or high impedance sources and battery systems.

MEPIC resistor

In February 2013, Vishay Intertechnology Inc introduced a new massive electro-pyrotechnic ignitor chip (MEPIC) resistor offering the Joule effect or flash ignition for fast firing times down to 250 µs. The device is based on an established technology used in the automotive industry and is available in wraparound or flip chip versions, or as the industry’s first MEPIC resistor to be integrated on a PCB substrate to simplify the assembly process. With firing energy down to 1.5 mJ and a typical ohmic range of 2 Ω (± 10 %), the device provides designers with very predictable, reproducible, and reliable behaviour. Offered in the standard 0805 case size for the wraparound and flip chip versions, and with other sizes available upon request, the resistor allows the easy setting-up of firing levels, and is compatible with various pyrotechnic compositions.

Power management controller

In February 2013, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) introduced a power management controller with 4- and 6-bit voltage identification (VID) interfaces. LM10011 is the first VID controller designed to operate along with a point-of-load regulator to adjust the core voltage (VCORE) of a VID-enabled processor, such as TI’s C6000 power-optimised DSPs and KeyStone multi-core DSPs. LM10011 enables TI’s DSPs to realise their full power savings capability to reduce power consumption in wireless infrastructure applications. The controller features industry-leading ‘one-per cent’ output accuracy and adjustable output current during start-up. LM10011 operates over a 2.97 V to 5.5 V input voltage range and is a cost-effective, easy-to-use solution.

In February 2013, Freescale Semiconductor launched Kinetis KL02 MCU which it claims to be the world’s smallest ARM powered MCU. High-resolution signal processor

High-resolution signal processor

In February 2013, iC-Haus GmbH introduced a high-resolution signal processor that is capable of evaluating sine/cosine sensors, and minimising angular errors and jitters with automatic functions. The iC-TW8 processor could also be used for initial push-button calibration and for permanently adapting signal path parameters during operation.

Its angular position is calculated at a programmable resolution of up to 65,536 increments per input cycle and output as an indexed incremental signal. The iC-TW8 has two analogue/digital converters that sample simultaneously at a rate of 250 kS/s, fast CORDIC algorithms and special signal filters, and an analogue front-end with differential PGA inputs that accepts typical magnetic sensor signals from 20 mVpp upwards.
