Energy efficiency, product durability and functionality go a long way in ensuring employee comfort at a manufacturing plant
Objective
Astro Shape is a company that shapes aluminium for commercial and residential markets, and is located in Struther, Ohio (USA). It was looking to replace its old lighting with more energy efficient units since the lights at its plant are in operation 24×7. The main aim was to find the best LED lights for the plant’s ceiling, keeping in mind its height. So, the main focus of the company was to select lights that could save energy.
Challenge
The challenge was to find LEDs that would provide the best quality light at the production space during the day as well as at night. The lights were also expected to enhance the appearance of the ceiling, which is extended from 5.48m to 10.66m (18ft to 35ft). Besides, Astro Shape had to keep in mind that old metal halides have a life span of 20,000 hours, which is not at all beneficial to them.
Solution
The company’s senior lighting consultant made a detailed survey of various LED manufacturers. After all the research, it was found that GE’s Albeo was the best option as it is a high bay light fixture and has an efficiency of 137 lumens per watt. After the 606 Albeo LEDs were installed, their life of 100,000 hours resulted in saving more than 1.85 million kWh, which means more than US$ 10,000 in a month and US$ 122,000 per year. Now the workers are able to enjoy their work because of the brighter environment.
