The competition between cable players and postpaid carriers is keeping the prices in check
As per reports, the US cable players have significantly taken over the postpaid phone net additions in the industry, capturing subscribers from the giant carriers and thus, limiting their growth in the past few years. Even though AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon handle most of the subscribers, these cable companies are altering the status quo across the wireless landscape.
For instance, in the second quarter of 2022, Xfinity, Spectrum and Optimum Mobile together accounted for 694,000 postpaid phone net additions, which is significantly more than Verizon’s subscriber growth in the same time period. It is noteworthy that the subscriber growth of AT&T and T-Mobile stood at 813,000 and 723,000, respectively.
To the consumers’ relief, this competition between cable players and postpaid carriers is keeping the prices of services and devices low.
The US smartphone industry faced upheavals as the pandemic affected the global economy and various markets. Based on pricing for two lines of entry-level unlimited plans, the cable players now offer wireless service for half the price per line that companies like Verizon and AT&T charge. But the carriers also offer Wi-Fi hotspot data with their unlimited plans, which the cable players do not have in their offer basket.
