India seeks to procure 30 Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio Systems (MIDS-JTRS).
The U.S. State Department has approved a potential sale of equipment and follow-on support for the MH-60R Seahawk helicopters to India, valued at approximately $1.17 billion. Lockheed Martin is designated as the principal contractor for this transaction. In February 2020, India also signed a contract worth $2.13 billion for 24 MH-60R helicopters to enhance its anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The first two helicopters were delivered in July 2021, with additional units commissioned into the Indian Navy’s INAS 334 squadron in March 2024.
The MH-60R is highly esteemed for its exceptional capabilities in anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW). It is equipped with cutting-edge digital sensors, including multi-mode radar and advanced electronic support measures, all integrated into a comprehensive mission system that significantly improves situational awareness for naval operations.
The proposed sale is a vital step in strengthening India’s defense posture against both present and future threats by significantly enhancing its anti-submarine warfare capabilities, as stated by the Defence Security Cooperation Agency. Per the notification, India seeks to procure 30 Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio Systems (MIDS-JTRS), which will play a crucial role in modernizing its military operations.
The package also encompasses sophisticated data transfer systems, external fuel tanks, and cutting-edge AN/AAS 44C(V) forward-looking infrared (FLIR) systems. Additionally, it features an intuitive operator machine interface assistant, spare containers, and comprehensive facilities for study, design, construction, and ongoing support. The scope includes critical support and test equipment, munitions, as well as integration and test support. Lockheed Martin, as the primary contractor, highlights its pivotal role in equipping allied nations with state-of-the-art military technology, reinforcing international security and collaboration.
