India aims to set up 9,000 megawatts of grid-connected solar plants by 2017, which is over eight times its current capacity.
Indian government has revealed its plans to auction the unsold rooftop solar projects across seven cities in the next two weeks. The projects involve setting up of grid-connected photovoltaic systems on rooftops.
According to a Bloomberg report, Tarun Kapoor, joint secretary at the ministry of New and Renewable Energy has informed that the government has received bids for half the planned 10 megawatts of rooftop solar capacity in the first round. The first round was completed on April 3. This has lead to the sale of unsold capacities, said Kapoor, in a phone interview with Bloomberg.
He said that the government will accept bids for unsold capacities in the first round and for similar projects in Hyderabad, Jaipur and Greater Noida. It is worth mentioning here that Azure Power India Pvt., SEI Green Technology Pvt. And Thermax Ltd. (TMX) won contracts to set up 5 megawatts of rooftop photovoltaic capacity in the cities of Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi and Gurgaon.
