He also met with entrepreneurs and VCs who can contribute to India’s growing talent in technological areas such as artificial intelligence.
India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently met with Micron Technology CEO Sanjay Mehrotra to discuss the potential for the company’s expansion in India’s flourishing-semiconductor ecosystem. This follows Mehrotra’s earlier meeting in July with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gujarat, where they talked about the US chip giant’s plans to enhance semiconductor manufacturing in India.
During Goyal’s four-day visit to the US, he also engaged in a roundtable discussion with top academicians at Stanford University to discuss setting up joint-campuses. He also met with Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and venture capitalists (VCs) who can contribute and help India’s young talent working in critical and emerging technological areas such as artificial intelligence (AI). He emphasized India’s young talent, dynamic business environment, and expanding economy as attractive opportunities for investment.
In June, Micron Technology declared its intention to invest $825 million in a new chip assembly and testing facility in Gujarat, aligning with India’s ambition to become a significant player in global semiconductor manufacturing within the next decade. The facility is expected to create 5000 direct and over 15000 indirect jobs.
Edward Knight, Board Chair of the US-India Business Council and Executive Vice Chairman of Nasdaq, noted the dynamic interactions and collaborations between the Indian and US governments in fostering entrepreneurship in both nations.
“What I would underscore is the energetic interaction and engagement between the two governments and the two ministers on the issue of promoting entrepreneurship in India and here in the US and how we can do that better, how cooperation between the two governments and the two business communities can lead to more high growth companies, entrepreneurship and economic growth both here and in India,” Edward Knight told after the meeting with Piyush Goyal.
