The 3-nanometre (3nm) chips are considered to be the most advanced chips by TSMC.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) announced mass production of its 3nm chips in Southern Taiwan on Thursday. The company’s chairman said it would continue to expand capacity on the island.
The 3nm chips are considered to be the most advanced chips by TSMC and will outperform the 5nm chips found in the latest Pro iPhone models. This announcement comes six months after Samsung achieved 3nm production.
TSMC chairman Mark Liu said the mass production was successful and with good yields. He said that the new 3-nanometre technology would create end products with a market value of $1.5 trillion within five years.
TSMC counts Apple Inc and Nvidia Corp among its biggest clients. The Taiwanese company said that it would build factories in northern and central Taiwan, in the Hsinchu and Central Taiwan Science Parks, to manufacture the next generation of 2-nanometre chips. TSMC has repeatedly said that the bulk of its manufacturing will remain in Taiwan.
The chipmaker also announced that its global R&D Centre in Taiwan’s Hsinchu Science Park will open in the second quarter of 2023, employing 8,000 R&D personnel, reported IANS.
Earlier this month, TSMC said it would more than triple its planned investment at its new Arizona plant to $40 billion, making this one of the largest foreign investments in US history. The Arizona fab will begin producing 4nm chips in 2024, followed by a second fab producing 3nm chips in 2026. The company is also building a chip plant in Japan and is in the early stages of reviewing a potential expansion into Germany.
