The new company plans to install up to 3000 high-power charging stations across both countries, catering to the needs of electric vehicles and fleet owners by offering quick and dependable charging solutions.
TotalEnergies and SSE have entered into a definitive agreement to form a joint venture, launching a significant new entity in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the UK and Ireland. This venture will operate under the name “Source.”
The newly established company plans to set up as many as 3000 high-power charging stations within the next five years, catering to the increasing needs of electric vehicles and fleet owners who require quick and dependable charging solutions.
Source aims to install these 3000 high-power charging points, each with a capacity of 150 kW or more, across 300 designated “EV hubs.” These hubs aim to capture 20% of the market share and will be conveniently located in and around urban areas. They will be energized by renewable resources, with SSE and TotalEnergies providing the necessary green power. Several of these hubs are already being constructed, with additional plans for many others currently in the developmental phase.
In the United Kingdom, Source is set to deliver the essential ultra-fast charging infrastructure. This development comes in response to recent legislation by the UK Government, which mandates zero vehicle emissions for all new cars and vans. This legislation highlights the need for enhanced power supply solutions for electric vehicles and fleet operators as a critical aspect of transportation decarbonization.
In Ireland, Source’s initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the government’s governmegovernment’s introduction of millions of electric vehicles on the roads by 2030. This effort is also aimed at bolstering consumer confidence in the reliability of electric vehicle charging systems.
Mathieu Soulas, Senior Vice President of New Mobilities at TotalEnergies, expressed enthusiasm about the venture. He stated that this initiative offers an excellent opportunity to broaden their European network and establish a leading position in providing high-power charging solutions. He emphasized their commitment to providing a comprehensive, nationwide, ultra-fast, and reliable charging service to both individual car owners and fleet operators, facilitating efficient and worry-free travel.
Neil Kirkby, Managing Director of Enterprise at SSE, emphasized SSE’s ongoing efforts to decarbonize the power systems of the UK and Ireland. He mentioned that SSE has led initiatives like building significant world-class projects and transforming electricity networks. He added that this new agreement further accelerates their commitment towards a decarbonized transport system, ensuring that vehicles crucial to the economy can operate more sustainably and efficiently.
