Tamil Nadu has been at the fulcrum of developing the solar power hub in the country. The state government resorts to solar power to meet its pathetic grid power situation. States like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra have also shown keen interest but one must commend TN’s effort for putting in effort in this direction.
According to a TOI report, Tamil Nadu is expected to generate around 40 per cent of the solar energy produced in the country by 2015, said Sudeep Jain, chairman and director, Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA), talking on the sidelines of an international workshop on renewable energy.
TN has majorly relied on the rooftop solar plants to generate solar power and the number is set to surge further, which will form the crux of country’s solar power revolution over the next three years. It is said that the state currently generates about 8,000 MW of renewable energy at present. But Jain believes that the state needs to work on improving its power storage mechanism. “We need to develop better technologies in this sector. Such expertise are not going to come from developed nations. Our technical institutions and research centres should come out with such projects,” he added.
