Thursday, December 18, 2014: Tata Power has decided to deploy high tech street lighting for the first time in the capital. As per the officials, the new street light system, developed with the astro timer technology will be set up with the LED lights to facilitate an efficient use of electricity. There are as many as 0.16 million streetlights in north and north-west Delhi, consuming almost 25.3MW of electricity.
Discoms noted that they are working to get these street lights installed in all new areas, while also ensuring their 100 per cent functionality. While talking about the concept of these new street lights, official noted that this futuristic technology equips an astro clock, which is an astronomic programmable timer that can be used to switch on and off the lighting loads as per the requirements at the time of sun rise and sunset. Astro clock automatically calculates the sunrise and sunset times for the particular ‘day of the year’, according to the geographical parameters as explained by the user.
Tata Power Delhi ensures about installing astro timers at all switching points which would conserve annual energy to the tune of Rs 39 million, by 2015. Another project taken up by the discom is ensuring whether all streetlights are energy efficient or not. Tata Power Delhi has deployed a pilot project in this concern by replacing 50 high voltage street lights with LED lights on the stretch between Sudhir Bose Marg and Delhi University. As they claim, this pilot project has resulted in about 48 per cent reduction in power consumption.
