Tata Motors Plans to Move Nexon EV Manufacturing from Pune to Sanand’s New Facility. Having recently acquired Ford India’s Sanand plant, the company intends to use it for electric vehicle production. Talks are underway with vendors for Nexon EV component production. The Sanand plant, operational by 2024, will increase capacity to 420,000 units annually.
Tata Motors is in the process of shifting the production of its popular electric SUV, Nexon EV, to a newly acquired plant in Sanand. This move follows the company’s acquisition of Ford India Limited’s manufacturing plant in Sanand, which is designated for producing electric vehicles. The Nexon EV, which is currently produced at Tata Motors’ Ranjangaon facility in Pune, is expected to be transferred to the Sanand plant as soon as it’s operational. So far, around 5 lakh units of the Nexon model have been sold.
While Tata Motors has not officially confirmed this shift, a spokesperson, responding to an inquiry, mentioned that following the recent acquisition of the new, advanced facility, the company is considering the production of additional models in Sanand. The plant is set to increase production capacity by 300,000 units annually, with the potential to expand to 420,000 units. Additionally, industry sources indicate that Tata Motors is in advanced talks with component suppliers for the Nexon EV production. The company, which began its journey with the Tata Nano, currently manufactures the Tigor and Tiago models at its own facility, having an annual production capacity of 1.8 lakh units and a total production of around 9.25 lakh cars.
In total, Tata Motors has sold more than 5 lakh units of the Nexon, including both EV and non-EV variants. The Sanand plant’s integration is expected to be complete by 2024. A spokesperson for the company noted that the Passenger & Electric Vehicles division of Tata Motors has been performing exceptionally well in the market in recent years.
Tata’s acquisition of Ford’s manufacturing facility was completed earlier this year for a total of INR 736 crore.
