Amid speculations of an indefinite closure, Tata Electronics gears up to restart operations at its fire-damaged Hosur plant, which supplies Apple iPhone components, even as investigations into the blaze continue.
Tata Electronics announced on Thursday that it will begin to resume operations at its fire-damaged factory in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. The plant produces components for Apple iPhones.
This came after initial talks of suspending operations in the plant indefinitely and speculations that Apple might turn to China to maintain its supply chain balance.
According to a Reuters report, local officials and fire department representatives stated that the fire broke out early Saturday in one of the facility’s six units, specifically in an area designated for chemical storage.
A company spokesperson mentioned that they planned to restart activities in several sections of the plant on Thursday itself and assured that all team members would continue to receive their full salaries while working towards complete operational recovery.
District administrative official K.M. Sarayu further stated that the Director of Industries for Tamil Nadu has authorised the company to resume operations.
However, the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the company and local authorities.
M. Velu, a district fire officer, noted that the extent of the damages was still unclear and explained that they would gain a better understanding only after the debris was cleared, as the entire structure had collapsed, making it difficult to assess the damage.
This incident at Tata Electronics is the latest in a series of challenges Apple suppliers face in India, particularly as the company seeks to diversify its supply chain away from China. Industry analysts have warned that the fire may disrupt production before the busy festive sales period.
