Streetlights in all municipal corporations and municipalities in Tamil Nadu will have light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, chief minister J Jayalalithaa announced in the assembly on Monday.
Work is going in 10 corporations, 19 municipalities and 18 wards in Thanjavur municipality to change sodium vapor lamps with LED bulbs.
The chief minister announced a project to provide LED bulbs in the remaining civic bodies.
“This year streetlights in Dindigul corporation and the rest of the municipalities will have LED bulbs and this project would be undertaken at a cost of Rs 320 crore under a joint venture scheme. The corporations and municipalities will save 35% on the electricity cost when LED bulbs are used,” she said.
Similarly in the rural areas, the present streetlights will be replaced with LEDs.
There are around 16.46 lakh streetlights with incandescent bulbs and at present 8.24 lakh bulbs are being replaced. This year, the remaining 8.22 lakh bulbs will be replaced with LED bulbs.
