StoreDot achieved its ‘100in4’ goal ahead of schedule in early prototype tests through a series of cell improvements, enabling extremely fast charging with existing infrastructure capabilities.
StoreDot, an Israeli company specializing in extremely fast-charging (XFC) battery technology for electric vehicles, has announced progress in the development of its next-phase technology roadmap. This follows its recent announcement of production-ready cells that can charge 100 miles in 5 minutes this year and aims for 100 miles in 3 minutes by 2028 as it moves towards commercialization.
The company’s advancement is based on comprehensive design and engineering upgrades across the entire battery system, focusing not just on charging speed but also on increasing energy density and various technological improvements. StoreDot’s “100in4” technology aims to enhance real-world performance using existing charging infrastructure by adopting a system-wide approach.
StoreDot is targeting at least a 10% improvement in energy density compared to its “100in5” cells, allowing for more mileage from a charge at existing charging rates. This goal will be achieved by optimizing various aspects of the battery, including chemistry, cell and pack engineering, cooling design, and internal connections.
For the “100in4” technology, StoreDot has already reached 1100 XFC cycles in a small form factor cell, with an anticipated energy density of 340Wh/kg in a large EV form factor. This milestone was achieved ahead of schedule, and the company will continue to refine its XFC technology to produce cells that can charge 100 miles in just 4 minutes by 2026.
The small form factor “100in4” prototype features a 3Ah multi-layer battery cell with internal electrode layers similar to those in larger battery cells that StoreDot has already proven and scaled up for EV packs, demonstrating the scalability and maturity of the prototype cell.
Dr. Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot, emphasized the importance of a balanced, system-level approach to unlock the full potential of XFC battery technology, focusing on technological enhancements across the board to provide an extremely fast charging experience that is compatible with today’s infrastructure.
StoreDot recently announced its anticipated 2024 milestones, including the demonstration of the world’s first EV pack equipped with XFC technology, shipping prismatic B-samples to OEMs, and expanding its operations in the US. The company remains on track with the production-readiness of XFC cells that can deliver 100 miles charged in 5 minutes this year, 100 miles charged in 4 minutes in 2026, and 100 miles charged in 3 minutes by 2028.
