In India, the Seal will come equipped with an 82.5kWh battery pack and rear-wheel drive, offering a claimed range of 570km on the WLTP cycle.
As BYD prepares to introduce its third product, the Seal EV, in India on March 5, here is the key information about its specifications. The Seal will be imported fully, and dealers have already started taking unofficial bookings. It was first showcased in India at the 2023 Auto Expo.
Specifications, Powertrain, and Range of the India-Spec BYD Seal: In India, the Seal will come with an 82.5kWh battery pack and rear-wheel drive, providing a claimed range of 570km on the WLTP cycle. The rear axle’s permanent magnet synchronous motor delivers 230hp and 360Nm of torque. BYD states a 0-100kph acceleration time of 5.9 seconds for this variant, which weighs 2,055kg. The battery features BYD’s patented blade technology, similar to other models from the brand, and supports charging speeds of up to 150kW, allowing a 10-80 per cent charge in 37 minutes. A regular 11kW AC charger takes 8.6 hours to charge from 0-100 per cent. While these details pertain to the entry-level RWD variant, sources indicate that a dual-motor AWD variant with 530hp and a claimed range of 520km might also be available.
Exterior, Interior, and Features of the BYD Seal: The Seal borrows design elements from the 2021 Ocean X concept, adhering to BYD’s “ocean aesthetics” design language and ocean-themed naming. Notable exterior features include a coupe-like all-glass roof, flush-fitting door handles, four boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights, a split headlamp design, and a full-width LED light bar at the rear. Inside, the BYD Seal features a rotating 15.6-inch infotainment screen in the centre console, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a heads-up display for the driver. The floating touchscreen is surrounded by central AC vents, with the drive selector and a scroll wheel for selecting drive modes below it. The centre console also includes basic controls for functions like a heated windscreen, volume control for the audio system, and two wireless charging pads.
Expected Price and Rivals of the BYD Seal: The Seal is expected to be priced at around Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom), positioning it as a close competitor to the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which is priced at Rs 45.95 lakh (ex-showroom). The Ioniq 5 is similar to the BYD Seal in terms of specifications, with an RWD motor producing 217hp and a 72.6kWh battery pack offering a claimed range of 630km.
