Skoda India Considers Launching Elroq Electric SUV in India

The global debut of the Skoda Elroq is scheduled for later this year, with its European sales beginning in early 2025. Following the completion of a feasibility study, Skoda might begin local assembly of these SUVs in the final quarter of 2025.

Skoda India is considering the introduction of the Elroq electric SUV to the Indian market, alongside the already confirmed Enyaq iV. The company is also evaluating the possibility of locally assembling both electric vehicles. Scheduled for a global unveiling later this year, the Skoda Elroq will hit the European market in early 2025. Local assembly of the SUV in India could begin by the end of 2025, pending the results of ongoing feasibility studies.

Petr Janeba, Skoda India’s brand director, explained that the Enyaq and Elroq are built on the same platform, though they have different chassis. He noted that this similarity leads to considerable efficiencies in the parts and components business, which the company has evaluated.

Skoda is also considering whether to engage with the Indian government’s newly announced EV manufacturing policy from March, which requires participants to set up manufacturing operations in India within three years to start EV production. Participating firms can benefit from reduced customs duties on a limited number of car imports as an incentive. The policy requires a minimum investment of Rs 4,150 crore.

Should Skoda opt into this EV policy, it would not only help the company meet CAFÉ standards but also allow the importation of select EV models at a reduced 15% customs duty, akin to that for CKD models. Without opting into the policy, Skoda plans to begin its EV operations on a smaller scale, focusing primarily on the Enyaq.

The Enyaq iV, built on the VW Group’s MEB platform, measures 4,648mm in length and 1,877mm in width, slightly smaller than the Skoda Kodiaq and designed as a two-row SUV. It was showcased at the Bharat Mobility Show earlier this year. The Indian market is expected to receive the top-tier Enyaq iV 80x, featuring a 77kWh battery, dual motors, and capable of 125kW DC fast charging, covering 513km (WLTP) on a full charge.

Details about the production version of the Elroq are still under wraps, but Skoda recently indicated that the all-electric SUV would be about 4.2 meters long and the first to feature the new Modern Solid design language. The Elroq will offer four variants (50, 60, 85, and 85x) with varying battery capacities (55kWh, 63kWh, and 82kWh) and power outputs ranging from 168hp to 295hp. Both RWD and AWD options will be available, boasting a potential range exceeding 560km.
