SK Telecom, a telecommunications provider based in Seoul, has announced a US$3 million investment in Twelve Labs, a San Francisco-based startup specializing in AI-powered video analysis. This investment aligns with SK Telecom’s strategic push into advanced AI technologies and global partnerships.
Twelve Labs is known for developing AI models that enable deep analysis and understanding of video content, providing tools for video search, summarization, and categorization. This collaboration is expected to enhance SK Telecom’s AI capabilities and support Twelve Labs’ growth in the AI video analysis market. The move highlights a growing trend of international partnerships to leverage cutting-edge AI solutions, further strengthening innovation ecosystems in both South Korea and the United States.
In addition, the two companies have agreed to collaborate on the development and advancement of technologies that apply multimodal AI to the security and public safety sectors, including AI control systems. For instance, in the case of AI control systems, traditional methods required a single worker to monitor numerous CCTV feeds for extended periods. By integrating Twelve Labs’ multimodal AI model, it becomes possible to efficiently search, identify, and summarize significant events, movements, and individuals that occurred throughout the day.
Jaeseong Lee, CEO of Twelve Labs, expressed optimism about the collaboration with SK Telecom, stating that it is expected to enable Twelve Labs’ image understanding technology to deliver innovative AI solutions across various industrial settings. Their technology has been applied in diverse sectors, including media, entertainment, gaming, sports, and security, to enhance video content accessibility and utility.
Lee Jae-shin, Head of AI Growth Strategy at SK Telecom, added that through this collaboration, they aim to further enhance their competitiveness in the multimodal AI field. Together, they plan to expand the range of services and business applications that enable customers to experience AI-driven innovation in a practical and impactful way.
