The mantra that J.S. Gujral, the managing director of SGS Tekniks, believes in is, “Quality right the first time and every time, without fail.” The company’s manufacturing units are equipped with six of the latest SMT lines from Fuji and Yamaha, which come with SPI (solder paste inspection), AOI (automated optical inspection), ICT (in-circuit test) XRay and BGA rework capabilities. The company has the in-house capabilities to develop functional test jigs on LabVIEW software.

Machinery used at the facilities

In SGS Tekniks, a typical SMT line consists of the following equipment:

  • PCB loader

  • PCB cleaner

  • Solder paste printer

  • Solder paste inspection system

  • Pick and place machine

  • Fine pitch placer

  • Reflow oven

  • Automatic optical inspection system

  • PCB unloader

Products manufactured

  • Printed circuit board assemblies

  • Energy meters

  • Thermal printers

  • Power supplies

  • Industrial lighting

  • Medical devices

  • Railway circuit boards

  • Telecom sub systems

Key market segments

The key market segments that SGS caters to in India and across the world include:

  • Automotive

  • Industrial

  • Consumer

  • Energy meter

  • Medical electronics

  • Railways

  • IoT

  • Office automation

Services offered

1. PCB assemblies

  • μBGA and surface mount PCB assemblies

  • Mixed technology and through-hole PCB assemblies

  • The company also offers peripheral services like wire harnessing, conformal coating, lacquer coating and potting.

2. Box-build products

SGS Tekniks offers the complete integration of services and has customised lines for box building.

3. Electronics design services

While providing electronics manufacturing services (EMS), SGS Tekniks also partners with customers to provide electronics design services (EDS) at any phase of the product development cycle—from the conceptual stage to mass production.

A focus on quality

SGS Tekniks aims to follow the latest industry practices. The best manufacturing practices being followed include 5S, SQC and SPC, Kaizen, quality circles, lean manufacturing, TQM and Six Sigma. Soldering standards that are being adhered to are IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001. The company has a barcode base process and product traceability system working under SAP Hana environment.

Testing labs

The company uses SPI, AOI, an 80X magnification microscope, X-ray inspection, ICT (in-circuit testing) and FCT (functional testing), soak tests, etc, in the production process to ensure quality.

Managing the supply chain for components

According to company sources, the biggest challenge in EMS is inventory management. In order to have the right supply chain for components and to prevent inventory pile-up, SGS makes changes in its customer plan, MOQ (minimum order quantity) and SPQ (standard packing quantity) typically after every 45 days.

Selecting the right vendor

SGS follows a standard selection process to choose its vendors, which is based on quality systems, financial health, customer profile, capacity, etc. After the total analysis of the inputs mentioned in the vendor form, commercial aspects and personal visits follow, after which SGS approves the vendor.

Recent investments

Apart from investing continuously every year, in 2016-17, SGS invested in a new manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, which has one SMT line. It also invested in an additional SMT line at its Manesar plant.

Expansion plans and possible challenges

The company has already planned to expand its Manesar and Bengaluru units, with further investments of approximately ₹ 200 million. However, the key challenge that SGS is facing is the absence of a clear policy road map for the next 7-10 years, based on which it can plan its investments in the EMS and components sectors. SGS has applied for incentives from the central government for the same.

Steps taken for a greener environment

In order to be environmentally responsible, SGS has invested in LED lamps, and reduced the cycle time of its machines by optimising their panel size and PCB designs. The company’s manufacturing facilities are RoHS compliant. These facilities also harvest rainwater and focus on planting trees. SGS disposes its e-waste through authorised recyclers. The next step this ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified company plans to take is to deploy industrial scale solar power systems at its factories.
