- DuPont recently joined Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC) as a founding member
- SCC is an ecosystem-wide effort to advance the semiconductor industry’s response to the challenge of climate change
- It will be officially launched during COP27 in Egypt this month
In a recent development, Delaware-based DuPont announced that it has joined the Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC) as a Founding Member. SCC is touted as the first global, ecosystem-wide effort to advance the semiconductor industry’s response to the challenge of climate change. In 2019, DuPont, the innovative material producer, had set 2050 as the target year to go carbon neutral in its operations.
SCC
The SCC is a part of the SEMI Sustainability Initiative, and it includes member companies from across the semiconductor value chain. The Consortium aims to accelerate progressive climate action by collaborating on tools to assist in reporting and evaluating Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG). It will advocate for innovative ideas for the use of microelectronics to address climate change, including awareness of opportunities and best-known methods.
President of DuPont Electronics & Industrial, Jon Kemp, who is also a member of SEMI’s international board of directors, commented: “As a global leader in semiconductor fabrication and packaging materials, DuPont is proud to be a Founding Member of the Semiconductor Climate Consortium, a historic industry initiative that can accelerate momentum for positive climate action.”
Stating ‘innovation’ and ‘collaboration’ as the hallmarks of the semiconductor ecosystem, Kemp suggested that the same principles will be applied to achieve critical climate goals both faster and at a global scale.
“Need to Pool Resources”
SEMI President and CEO, Mr Ajit Manocha applauded DuPont for its commitment to becoming a Founding Member of the SCC and for its continued support of global sustainability efforts. He noted that although SEMI member companies have individually made tremendous strides in sustainability, there’s a need to pool industry resources to solve the difficult decarbonization challenges and to meet tracking and reporting requirements across the value chain. “The SCC members look forward to defining and prioritizing sustainability goals and to harness the collective energy of the global semiconductor supply chain to create solutions,” added Manocha.
COP27
SCC supports the Paris Agreement and related accords, which have set the goal of limiting global warming potential to 1.5°C. It is noteworthy that the SCC will be officially launched during COP27 in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt. COP27 is short for the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC(United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). It will be held from 6 to 18 November 2022 in Egypt, with a view to building on previous successes and paving the way for future ambition to effectively tackle the global challenge of climate change.
