Tuesday, November 12, 2013: After having taken the top spot in the consumer electronics and mobile market, Samsung is now planning to focus on medical devices in India.
S I Cho, the global head of Samsung’s health and medical equipment business, told TOI that a complex healthcare system can be served effectively by the group by joining together its IT, image processing and communication technologies into medical devices.
The company entered the global market in January this year and then formed a separate entity on the health and medical equipment (HME) business as part of its subsidiary, Samsung India.
Cho added, “We believe that today’s complex healthcare systems can be served effectively by us, through our expertise in the area of technology as well as our global partnership with leading healthcare companies. We plan to continue offering integrated healthcare solutions to our consumers that support fast, easy and accurate diagnosis.”
Samsung has so far set up 45 distributors in key metros and cities who will be catering to all consumer requirements across India. Next it plans to enter the Tier-II and -III cities over the next year.
They recently announced their three major product lines namely ultrasound, in-vitro diagnostics and digital radiography as part of the “GEO” brand in India. They will be adding more categories in the next few years.
India is surely a top priority Samsung because of its expected growth in overall healthcare and medical equipment industry, Cho added.
“We are seeking to provide a seamless and unique healthcare experience specialized in m-Health by leveraging top mobile technology. Products within our existing three categories have digital capabilities that enable the results to be immediately transmitted to a specified location anywhere in India. This is extremely important in the Indian context as it allows those living in remote areas to visit a mobile telemedicine clinic, and have their medical images examined by specialists anywhere in India.”
