At the Mobile World Congress 2022 held at Las Vegas, Samsung Networks signed its first major contract with a US cable operator; agreeing that 5G connectivity will be provided for Comcast across its 600 MHz and CBRS spectrum bands. This also includes deploying the new Strand small cell radio that was specifically developed along with Comcast for the cable market.
Samsung Networks was a 4G network infrastructure provider a decade ago. Its portfolio focuses on open RAN/vRAN solutions. The company also won multi-billion dollar contracts with companies like Verizon, Vodafone and most recently Dish. The company has now stepped ahead and outlined the mobile infrastructure strategy to industry analysts at the MWC2022. It encompasses targeting the cable and regional MNO markets in the US (and elsewhere), as well as the private network’s market.
The CBRS market includes a host of enterprises and other organizations building their own private networks. Samsung is looking at the cable market, regional operators, and private networks as opportunities ahead.
However, with major rivals expected to launch “similar” products in 2023, the open RAN/vRAN market is set to become much more competitive.
