Friday, July 05, 2013: While the current set-top box market is all set to take off, the Infonetics Research has reported less than 3 million video gateways being sold last year in 2012. By 2017 however, the number is set to peak up to 33 million and the market for the same will see double and even triple annual growth in the shipments. Concerning the events, Samsung in a strategic move has now acquired Boxee, one of the biggest set-top box makers at an amount estimated to be around $30 million. However, there was no formal announcement made of the acquisition.
For people who aren’t yet aware of Boxee, the service allows streaming broadcasted TV channels to a range of compatible devices along with unlimited space for recording in the cloud. This will mean that users will be able to record as many TV shows as they choose to and view it anywhere and at any time. All that is needed is a broadband internet gateway and a HD antenna.
According to a published statement from Samsung spokeswoman, the company has acquired the key assets and talents from Boxee. This will certainly help the company in continual improvement of user experience on all its connected devices.
According to Rob Enderle, this acquisition makes quite of a sense also because Samsung has been trying to focus on its competition with Apple. With this Samsung is now a player in the media streaming market along with Google, Microsoft and Intel. This certainly is going to be a hard fought area according to Mr. Rob.
