The e-waste and lithium-ion battery recycling company is now one of four registered lithium-ion battery recyclers, alongside Lohum Cleantech, Attero, and LICO Materials.
Recyclekaro has enrolled on the government’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) portal for the recycling of e-waste. This move places the e-waste and lithium-ion battery recycling company alongside Lohum Cleantech, Attero, and LICO Materials as one of the quartet of registered lithium-ion battery recyclers, affirming its dedication to the sustainable management of e-waste.
With its recycling capabilities, Recyclekaro is poised to assist manufacturers, producers, and importers of lithium-ion batteries and electronic products in India in achieving their EPR objectives. These objectives encompass recycling 4,200 metric tons (MT) of lithium-ion batteries and 15,000 MT of e-waste, thereby offering substantial support for sustainability objectives.
India ranks as the world’s third-largest producer of e-waste, generating 1.71 million metric tons annually. However, only about 40% of this e-waste was recycled in the previous fiscal year. To combat this issue, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) launched the EPR portal. This initiative aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the management of electronic waste across the country. It facilitates the monitoring of e-waste from production through to disposal, connecting manufacturers to registered recyclers such as Recyclekaro and simplifying the collection and recycling processes. The system promotes economic feasibility through EPR credits, aids companies in achieving sustainability goals, and ensures compliance with regulations. Furthermore, it enhances data collection and reporting while spurring innovation in recycling technologies, promoting a more sustainable e-waste management model in India.
The Battery Waste Management (BWM) Rules, 2022, issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, are applicable to all battery types. These regulations require producers, including manufacturers and importers, to meet specified collection and recycling targets as part of their EPR obligations. Registration through the online portal developed by the CPCB is mandatory for producers, recyclers, and refurbishers, improving accountability, traceability, and transparency in fulfilling these responsibilities.
Rajesh Gupta, the Founder and Director of Recyclekaro, mentioned that their registration on the government’s EPR portal does more than just enable direct links with manufacturers to help them meet their waste management obligations. It also greatly enhances their business opportunities. According to him, this registration reinforces their standing within the industry and strengthens their dedication to promoting sustainable and responsible recycling practices.
Recyclekaro has cemented its status in the Indian recycling sector by achieving a 90% metal extraction efficiency from scrap batteries, with purity levels surpassing 99%, as claimed in a recent press release by the company. Looking ahead, Recyclekaro plans to double its recycling capacity by the second quarter of FY 2024-25.
