Qualcomm has expanded their footprint in India with a design centre at Chennai. The Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who inaugurated the centre, announced that the government will partner with Qualcomm to lay a roadmap for automobile and telecom electronics industry development.
The Chennai design centre will focus on wireless technologies that will complement Wi-fi. It will host a team of 1600 semiconductor designers to achieve end-to-end semiconductor design (All of the design achieved at once place). Located on Old Mahabalipuram road, IT Corridor, the centre was set up with an investment of ₹177.27 Cr.
Qualcomm will help the government to set up a roadmap for industry growth in automobiles and telecom electronics. The company has also announced a 6G university research program in India and will set up a 6G labs in the country.
An expansion of its existing research program, this program supports a select group of professors from IITs and IISCs. The first group of 17 academicians will receive a fund of $1.02 million over 3 years. This aligns with the government’s Bharat 6G Vision.
Qualcomm has been increasing its investment in India to beat its competitors AMD and Micron. The company plans to spend over US$ 1 Billion in India this year.
