PSMC In Talks With India Over Setting Up Wafer Labs

PSMC intends to assist local Indian companies to set up a foundry and train talent.

Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. is in talks with the Indian government to set up fabrication labs in India.

Taiwan’s third-largest foundry intends to assist Indian companies such as Vedanta or Tata in setting up factories and training talent for fabs. Chairman Huang Chongren stated that PSMC is ready to sign a cooperation agreement with the Indian government.

This news comes months after a Taiwanese delegation of semiconductor manufacturers visited Dholera smart city in Gujarat and the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) at Mohali in a four-day visit to identify potential sites for setting fabs in India. PSMC officials were a part of this delegation.

Indian metals and mining conglomerate Vedanta partnered with Hon Hai Precision Industries (Foxconn) to set up a wafer fab, a semiconductor assembly and test unit, and a display factory in the state of Gujarat. Five companies have come forward for the centre’s ₹76,000 crore incentive scheme regarding the development of semiconductors and the display manufacturing ecosystem in India.

PSMC has set up factories in joint ventures with mainland China as well. PSMC offers a broad variety of manufacturing process technologies behind the leading edge including logic, DRAM and flash memory, PMICs, CMOS image sensors, and high-voltage circuits. It is Taiwan’s third-largest foundry after TSMC and UMC and the seventh-largest semiconductor foundry in the world, with three 12-inch and two 8-inch wafer labs.
