With the National Solar Mission now in its second phase and several power plants already established across the country, a new proposal from the UT Administration is planning to introduce solar installations in government houses in Chandigarh. For this reason, there are plans of setting up a 100 KWp solar PV plant at Lake Sports Complex, which will incur an estimated investment of Rs 2.8 crore. This plant will be responsible for supplying pathway lighting along the Sukhna Lake during night and the remaining of the energy will be utilized by the Sports Complex.
Apart from this, there is another plan of installing a 435 KWp capacity plant in Sector 5, Government College with an estimated investment of Rs 7 crore.
Other plans in this regard are a 50-0 KWp PV plant at Government College for Women (Sector 11) costing an estimated Rs 7 crore and another at GCG, Sector 42 that will see a 200 KWp capacity being installed. The UT Administration is also thinking of commissioning PV installation in other buildings as well including the Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 and the DC office in Sector 17.
Santosh Kumar, the director of Environment said that Chandigarh has surely taken the lead in harnessing and utilizing renewable solar power while providing interactive grid access. When there is a power shortage, the grid could be used and moreover there will be less energy used in the weekends which are generally holidays. A proposal for setting PV installation in private building too has been sent out to the government.
