Porsche Recalls 176 Units Of Taycan EVs Over Battery Module Defect

The company plans to fix the issue free of cost, though the process might be complex due to the battery pack’s placement on the vehicle floor.

Porsche has initiated a recall for 176 units of its all-electric Taycan in India due to a potential defect in the battery module. Owners of the affected vehicles are advised to contact their nearest Porsche outlet for further details and to schedule a fix. The company has not yet issued an official statement on the matter, but this crucial step implies the importance of addressing safety and performance issues promptly.

The issue of battery module defects leading to short circuits and potential fire hazards is a recurring theme in the EV industry, reflecting challenges in ensuring quality and safety at the supplier level. The defect reportedly stems from the supplier’s manufacturing process, emphasizing the criticality of quality control in the supply chain for electric vehicles (EVs). According to the experts, short circuits within battery cells can occur due to improper assembly, contamination, or substandard materials. In a battery cell, it can  lead to thermal runaway, where heat generated from the fault propagates through the battery pack, potentially causing fires.

The vehicles involve manufacturing between October 21, 2019, and March 4, 2024. The company plans to fix the issue free of cost, though the process might be complex due to the battery pack’s placement on the vehicle floor. Currently, no specific details about the recall or the fix are available.

The all-electric Porsche Taycan is a premium offering available in two variants in India. Prices for the Taycan start at Rs 1.89 crore (ex-showroom). The car is equipped with either a 79.2 kWh battery pack or a 93.4 kWh battery pack, depending on the chosen variant. It offers an impressive range of up to 544 km on a single charge, making it a strong contender in the luxury EV market. The performance highlights include an acceleration from 0–100 km/h in just 4 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h, underscoring Porsche’s hallmark blend of performance and innovation.
