The Pune civic body will conduct an inquiry into the installation of LED street lights across the city, for which it has already spent Rs 5 billion so far.
The move follows complaints raised by several corporators about the poor quality of these fittings. Elected representatives cutting across party lines alleged that the LED lights are being installed in many areas, but they are not functioning properly owing to poor maintenance.
A section of corporators said all their complaints regarding the poor lights have fallen on deaf ears. The coporators also claimed that the poor lights were not only causing problems to commuters, but were also a threat to local citizens.
The corporators believe that inadequate lighting on streets poses a security threat for women. They also observed that the lights, which have a three-year warranty, are getting damaged in just three months.
Meanwhile, the corporators sought dedicated staff to monitor the street lights.
