The project is expected to generate commercial savings of INR 250 crore, reduce diesel consumption by 190 lakh litres and offset 58,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the first on-grid solar project with an advanced Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The Lakshadweep Energy Development Agency (LEDA) will now source its power from these solar installations, marking a significant shift from diesel-based energy to sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives for the region.
Developed by SECI (Solar Energy Corporation of India), this groundbreaking initiative spans Kavaratti and Agatti islands, boasting a total solar capacity of 1.7 MW and a 1.4 MWh battery storage facility located in Kavaratti. SunSource Energy has been responsible for providing Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services for this project.
Over its anticipated technical lifespan, this project is expected to generate commercial savings of approximately INR 250 crore. Notably, it will lead to a substantial reduction in diesel consumption, equivalent to up to 190 lakh litres, and the offsetting of 58,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, underscoring its vital role in promoting green energy.
Kushagra Nandan, Co-Founder, Managing Director, and CEO of SunSource Energy, expressed pride in the company’s pivotal role in this groundbreaking project. He emphasised the project’s alignment with SunSource Energy’s commitment to advancing sustainable initiatives that have a lasting impact and contribute to India’s ambitious net-zero goals.
Mr. Shreedhar Singh, Additional General Manager of Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. (SECI), highlighted how the project addresses the energy challenges faced by Lakshadweep and aligns seamlessly with the broader national objective of promoting green energy. He expressed confidence that it will set the stage for more sustainable and resilient energy solutions in island regions across the country, acknowledging the support of the Lakshadweep Administration and the Electricity department and commending SunSource Energy for their expertise in executing this challenging project.
