Discussions with stakeholders are currently underway to establish manufacturing standards for electric ambulances. This will enable hospitals and healthcare providers to acquire these vehicles and access subsidies through the PM E Drive scheme.
The government is poised to issue comprehensive guidelines by December 2024 to facilitate access to a substantial ₹500 crore subsidy aimed at promoting the adoption of electric ambulances nationwide under the PM E Drive scheme.
In a significant move towards sustainable healthcare infrastructure, a recent meeting convened in Delhi brought together key stakeholders—including industry experts, policymakers, and healthcare professionals—to deliberate on the technical performance and safety standards essential for electric ambulances. The discussions focused on various categories of emergency medical vehicles, such as medical first responders, patient transport units, Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulances, and Advanced Life Support (ALS) vehicles. The goal is to ensure that each type meets stringent criteria for efficiency, safety, and reliability.
According to sources within the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), these guidelines are expected to be implemented before the end of 2024. Ongoing consultations with stakeholders are crucial for finalizing the manufacturing standards for electric ambulances. Establishing these standards will enable hospitals and healthcare providers to procure environmentally friendly vehicles that comply with national regulations, thereby qualifying them for the subsidies offered under the PM E Drive scheme.
The MHI has recently unveiled the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E DRIVE) Scheme, marking a significant investment of ₹10,900 crore into the country’s electric vehicle infrastructure. Within this ambitious initiative, ₹500 crore has been specifically earmarked over the next two years to promote the widespread adoption of electric ambulances. This allocation underscores the government’s commitment to advancing sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions within the healthcare sector. By facilitating the transition to electric ambulances, the scheme aims to reduce carbon emissions, enhance the efficiency of emergency medical services, and set new benchmarks for healthcare delivery across the nation.
