According to a report by Thenews, the ministry of climate change of Pakistan has set a target to transform 3,000 CNG stations to EV charging stations. It also plans to convert 100,000 cars and 500,000 bikes and rickshaws to EVs in next four years.
The report said that an official said that the ministry is still working out the details about how the government will tackle the situation when high concentration of EV home charging during peak periods will overload local power transformers. The official added that the charging stations for EVs will require electricity that will be generated through distribution companies only. The option of making own electricity supply arrangement is also open.
Develop a culture of electric vehicles throughout Pakistan
According to the report, the official also stated that questions like whether battery powered EVs will be competitive with conventional fueled vehicles in next five to ten years remain. Other issues like how and when cost-effective charging infrastructure would be developed in the country also have to be looked after said the official.
The report said that the spokesperson of the climate change ministry said that carbon emissions from motor vehicles are considered one of the largest contributors to air pollution. The ministry is working to introduce culture of electric vehicles throughout Pakistan. He also said that the use of EVs may help solve issues like air pollution, rising fuel import bill and saving two-thirds of transportation.
