Okaya EV partnered with local distributor Douglas and Sons to manage its operations in Colombo.
Energy storage solutions provider Okaya Power Group’s electric vehicle (EV) subsidiary launched Sri Lanka’s first fully electric bike in partnership with Douglas and Sons (DSL), at the inauguration of its first showroom in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Commenting on the occasion, managing director of Okaya Electric Vehicles, Anshul Gupta, said, “We take pride in opening our first showroom of Sri Lanka at Colombo, simultaneously with launching the country’s first-ever fully electric bike in partnership with Douglas and sons. Okaya is committed to providing top-of-the-line and sustainable electric mobility to our valued customers.”
Okaya EV is currently offering two slow-speed electric scooters—Freedum LI and ClassIQ, and three high-speed electric scooters — Faast F4, Faast F2B and Faast F2T, in the Indian market. Of these, Okaya will reportedly sell Faast F4, Faast F2B and Freedum in the Sri Lankan market.
The showroom of Okaya EV in Colombo was inaugurated by DSL’s chairman and managing director, Saroj Perera, vice president of international business at Okaya Power Pvt Ltd, Anil Gupta, and the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Gopal Baglay.
Established in 1986, DSL started as an auto parts importer and later diversified its operations to import and distribute tyres, and batteries. The company manages its own imports and distribution division with over 3,500 dealers in Sri Lanka and three warehouse complexes, with a total space of 60,000 sq ft, all just less than 10 km from Colombo. It represents prominent brands such as Lucas TVS, Wood Auto Parts, Fleet Gasket, Camoflex Wiper Blade, Minda automotive parts, KLN Filters, Mahale Pistons and Remson Cables, in the two-wheeler and three-wheeler spare parts segment.
The Okaya Power Group announced its foray into the EV business in July 2021 with a two-wheeler manufacturing plant in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, and plans to start another facility in Haryana. The company had also announced the launch of three more plants in Neemrana, Rajasthan by 2023-25. The company intends to develop vehicles for every segment of the market including business and delivery solutions in addition to its existing line-up of charging infrastructure, battery, and EVs.
