January 31, 2015: NTPC, the Central Government PSU engaged in electricity generation, has barred foreign bidders for three of the solar projects, bids of which will open soon. NTPC is only allowing Indian manufacturers to participate, in order to promote Indian manufacturers, even though the government is pushing foreign companies to make fresh investments in the renewable sector.
The three projects will have a combined capacity of 750MW. NTPC is open to foreign companies to participate, which have Indian subsidiaries, in its future projects.
With a recent visit of US President Barrack Obama, India and Modi government received praise and aide to harness the renewable energies of the country. The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi eyes a fresh investment of $100 billion, majorly driven by foreign companies. India aims to create a solar energy capacity 33 times to 100GW by 2022.
