Tuesday, February 11, 2014: The Himalayan region of Ladakh, has geared up to completely adapt to clean energy sources and give up on non-renewable forms of energy like petroleum and coal. With the assistance from various public subsidies, Ladakh residents are now shifting to solar cookers, solar water heating systems and photovoltaic panels for electricity.
Ladakh is blessed with many resources like a good clear sky on a sunny day for solar setup, along with the cold desert’s low temperatures to ensure that the solar photovoltaic panels work effectively. As the region realises the economic value of solar power, the local people of the region are improving their energy independence and quality of environment in their region.
The government provides many subsidies all across the nation to initiate solar power usage, as many non-government organisations have brought forth low cost equipments to make effective use of solar energy.
The heavy imports of fossil fuels in the region from neighbouring exporters have forced Ladakh to look for resources of its own, as the air pollution has increased manyfold recently. Transporting fuels like kerosene and diesel with firewood have been an economic challenge, as well.
