May 20, 2015: The city of Nagpur is now catching up with the trend of using solar power as the Nagpur Metro Rail Corp Ltd (NMRCL) is planning to install 30MW of photovoltaic (PV) capacity to meet around 40 per cent of the electricity needs, including traction power, of its metro railway stations.
NMRCL managing director Brajesh Dixit said that the metro rail body has also been offered financial help from international bodies including a German state-owned bank KfW which is willing to extend a soft loan for the scheme, and the European Investment Bank (EIB) which is mulling the possibility as well.
Reports suggest that apart from the financial help, NMRCL will also seek German knowhow while developing the PV farm. KfW and federal government agency GIZ have expressed readiness to back the project technologically.
