The Light Fidelity technology will leverage wireless communication for the Indian Navy in inclement weather conditions, reports say.
Velmenni, a telecom startup, recently disclosed that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded a grant through the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative for its innovative Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) technology.
The grant aims to enhance wireless communication capabilities for the defence sector, focusing on addressing communication challenges experienced by the Indian Navy in demanding environments.
According to the startup, its Li-Fi technology can improve data transmission for the Indian Navy and other defence-related uses.
Using it, the Navy can establish fast connections in locations where radio frequency (RF) communication may be complicated or unreliable.
Through visible light, Li-Fi will ensure continuous connectivity in secure areas like underground facilities or shielded rooms where radio frequency signals cannot reach. This will allow uninterrupted communication and coordination during critical operations.
Velmenni founder and CEO Deepak Solanki, as reported by The Financial Express, stated that the iDEX grant signifies the potential of the company’s Li-Fi technology.
He mentioned that with these resources, they are positioned to transform wireless communication by ensuring secure and efficient data transmission through light.
Li-Fi uses LED bulbs as routers and operates on optical wireless communications (OWC) technology, transmitting data through visible, infrared, or ultraviolet light.
Further, it offers speeds up to 224GB per second, significantly faster than WiGig, a superfast Wi-Fi in the 60GHz band, which reaches up to 7GB per second, claims Velmenni.
The government’s iDEX programme aims to foster innovation in India’s defence sector by adopting cutting-edge technologies. It aligns with major programs like Make in India, Startup India, and the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM).
Founded in 2012, Velmenni, a New Delhi-based firm emerged as a player in visible light communications technology in India. It claims Li-Fi as its ‘flagship’ product, Li-Fi, which has advanced data communication.
Velmenni has developed a LiFi-based mesh network solution that enables data transfer over long distances. It helps to create wireless networks in environments like ground, motion, and air, where traditional optical cables are ineffective.
