MG Motor India gears up to electrify the sports car scene by introducing the Cyberster electric sports car, potentially leading a new flagship brand akin to Toyota’s Lexus or Maruti Suzuki’s Nexa.
MG Motor India is planning to introduce the Cyberster electric sports car in India. The announcement is expected at an event in Mumbai today, where the company will also display other future models. Although the Cyberster’s launch is not imminent, MG is considering establishing a new flagship brand or premium retail network, similar to Toyota’s Lexus or Maruti Suzuki’s Nexa, with the Cyberster potentially spearheading this initiative.
This move is part of MG’s broader strategy, backed by investment from JSW, to become a comprehensive player in India’s electric vehicle market. MG aims to offer a diverse range of electric vehicles, from the entry-level Comet priced below Rs 10 lakh to high-end cars costing over Rs 50-60 lakh. The MG-JSW alliance might also benefit from the Indian government’s new electric vehicle policy, which offers incentives for significant investments in the EV sector.
The Cyberster, first revealed at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed and initially showcased as a concept in 2021, marks MG’s return to sports cars and its first foray into electric sports cars. It features a 77kWh battery, dual electric motors, all-wheel drive, and boasts a 0-100kph time of 3.2 seconds with a range of 580km. An entry-level version with a single motor and rear-wheel drive is also available, offering 308hp and a 520km range.
The Cyberster’s design pays homage to MG’s sporting heritage, with a modern twist. It has a sleek exterior with distinctive features like petal-like alloy wheels, scissor doors, and a fabric soft-top. Inside, the cabin is equipped with a flat-bottomed steering wheel, multiple digital screens, and a center console with a waterfall effect.
Expected to launch internationally by mid-2024, the Cyberster is positioned as an “affordable” sports car, with a starting price of around £50,000 (approximately Rs 53 lakh).
